Leadville Race Recap

25 Aug by Jesse Swift

Hey Demons!
We just had a phenomenal race weekend in Leadville, where we got to see some amazing feats from our racers and our volunteers.

The day had a difficult start when our teammates Camden Konegni and Luke Ozment crashed just out of the start chute in the varsity boys’ race. Camden and Luke fell to the back of the group, but both made an incredible recovery, with Luke fighting all the way to first place. That same race, we also had Dylan Reid and Cooper Puffet who took 2nd and 6th out of the 39 varsity boys.

One of the highlights of the day was Riley Nelson, who finished first with a huge four-minute gap over second place in varsity girls, making her by far the fastest girl racer in the venue. We also saw Micah France and Ella Greenlee each take first place for sophomore boys and girls, respectively.

I’m amazed at how many strong performances our teammates had. These incredible efforts earned our team 7,598 points and landed us in second place in the region, only 78 points behind first.

Unfortunately, the afternoon rain and thunder hit at a bad time for our freshman riders, who never got to finish their time trial and earn their rankings. But even in tough conditions, they showed great sportsmanship and kept their spirits high.

One thing that really stood out to me wasn’t even during a race: seeing everyone work together to set up and then take down at the end of the day was incredible. It was inspiring to see our volunteers putting in their time to make these races possible — thank you, volunteers!

Great racing, riders, and amazing work, volunteers. Go Demons!
